Movie and Sushi Nights
The Zoroastrian Youth of British Columbia has been actively involved in organizing various events for our youth.
During the past month, we had held successful movie and sushi nights which various people
participated. Currently, we are gathering at Darbe_Mehr for every other week at 8:00 p.m. on Fridays for a
memorable night. The sole purpose of our events is to encourage diverse members of our community ranging from
13-35 to attend our events, mingle with their friends, find new friends and strengthen our religious ties with each
other. As we mentioned previously in our email which was sent through ZSBC, we require
assistance and support. We have asked individuals to visit the www.zyouth.org to learn
more about our future events and register their email address so they can be updated regarding our future plans. We
also would like to thank ZSBC’s broad of directors for supporting and encouraging us in our mission. Hope to see
more people considering coming to our events and enjoying being with their fellow Zoroastrians.
Sleepover for Children
It was a treat all children were waiting for anxiously. It was a fun filled night for children who came to the sleepover
that was organized by the Sunday Avesta Classes. All children were treated to pizza for dinner and a movie, but the
highlight of the evening was Bobby the Clown who enthralled one and all with his magic tricks. The highlight being
when he pulled out a rabbit out of the hat. The kids then had breakfast the next morning graciously prepared by the
parents. It was indeed a night the children will remember for a long time. Kudos to all involved for making this
event a tremendous success.

Sunday 28th September 2008 a bright Sunny day at the Garry Point, Steveston - Richmond was the venue for the seniors’ picnic. A total of 33 seniors attended the picnic and we had Naria the guest speaker who graciously volunteered her time to give a 20 minute fun and educational insight in to how one can prevent Memory loss and alzhermiers. The picnic started at 11 am and went on till around 4pm. A delicious lunch was served comprising of Biryani, Dal, ice cream and gulab jamuns. Cakes were then served with Tea later in the afternoon. All seniors who attended were also asked to play games like “pass the pillow” and music was organised for their entertainment. Seniors also went for a walk along the trail with the volunteers who had come forward to offer their time and services. The seniors were also able to see the Electoral candidates who were present at the Steveston market to make their speeches just prior to the elections.
Indoor Sports
On a wet rainy day about 35 people attended the indoor sports. There were many “first timers” in this tournament including a new Darts champion and a new Table tennis Men’s and Women’s champion. Before the games began everybody observed a minute’s silence for “Remembrance Day”.
Newcomer Cyrus Jokhi visiting us from Poona, India created the biggest upset of the tournament when he defeated defending champion Mehernosh Kasad in the semi-finals of the Men’s Table Tennis tournament. He then went on to defeat Rumi Mistry in the finals to take the Men’s Singles title. Another thrilling match was between Jersis Irani and Rumi Mistry which Rumi Mistry clinched in a three set thriller.
In the Women’s Table Tennis finals Ava Irani defeated Behroze Mistry in straight games to take the women’s title. There was heavy competition in the “Darts” tournament with very few points separating competitors. In the end Percy Bhagat clinched the title with Faramarz Amjadi taking second place.
Lunch was served to all participants at a nominal price consisting of Flying Wedge Pizzas, chips, pop and spiced tea. Due to shortage of time the Table Tennis Mixed Doubles could not be carried out. Due to lack of participants the backgammon event had to be cancelled.

Food Fest
July 6, 2008
The Food Fest held at the Darbe Mehr, on July 6, 2008 after a span of nearly 5 years was indeed a feather in the ZSBC cap. The function started off promptly at 12 noon. Guests had started lining up for the food tickets well before time. We had a total of 140 guests, (12 of these were non community members from the neighboring area and guests of community members). Twenty two volunteers helped out in some capacity or the other. By 3:15 pm all the food was sold out. The children thoroughly enjoyed the services of Sarah the face painter and we had originally planned to use her services for only 1.5 hours but we had to extend it to 2.5 hours simply because of the demand. The Penny in the Bottle was one of the popular games managed by none other than Mr. Homi Italia. The winner of the event was Mahnaz Burzeh hitting the nail on its head with an exact amount of $777. She won a set of 6 beer glasses, again, graciously donated by Mr. Homi Italia.
40th Annual General Meeting
June 22, 2008
The meeting was called to order by Mr. Sharook Kapadia, President, on June 22, 2008 at 3.45 p.m. He welcomed all the members present at the meeting (33 in Person and 20 by proxy) and asked everyone to stand and observe a minute of silence in memory of the members of our Society who had passed away during the past year. Mr. Sharook Kapadia opened his speech by mentioning that last year was a good year for ZSBC and the Society had many successes such as Gatha prayers, Casino Royale Night, New Year’s dance, etc. He thanked all Board of Directors and volunteers for their efforts. The members approved unanimously the minutes of the 39th Annual General Meeting as submitted. Mr. Farrokh Namdaran, Honorary Treasurer, had distributed the Society’s financial statements for the fiscal year 2008 before the commencement of the meeting. The audited financial statements for the year ended March 20, 2008 was adopted as submitted. Mr. Namdaran gave a brief overview on the financial position of the Society as at March 20, 2008 and compared it with the financial position as at March 20, 2008. A surplus was noted similar to the past five years. The meeting ended at 5.10 pm. A vote of thanks by all went to Sharook Kapadia, president, for chairing the meeting and a new set of Directors were approved. After the meeting all present were treated to tea and snacks.
Gatha Prayers
This was another successful event organized by ZSBC with an attendance of ±100 persons daily.
We would again like to thank Ervad Adil Antia and Ervad Firdos Balsara for reciting the prayers, and the many volunteers for their efforts. We hope these 5 days allowed you time for reflection and a sense of peace as they did us.
We raised approximately $1617.98 from the sales of sukhad, candles, and food; $1702.00 from the 33 paid-for vases; and raised $574 in donations. After deducting all expenses, we will bank the balance in an attempt to build a cushion for the Gathas, in case our local mobeds in the coming years are for some reason not available to perform the prayers. Thank you for coming and we hope you will also participate in the prayers next year.
Pateti Function
August 23rd 2008
The 40th Anniversary Pateti and Khordadsal function was held at the Cheers Restaurant and Pub, North Vancouver. He performed some simple and some really mind blowing tricks. The one where he moved the monkey from one volunteer to the other was the highlight of the presentation. At the end of his show, animal balloons were made for all children. Dinner was served right after and the choices of dishes were appreciated by one and all. At 10:00 PM the guests were enthralled to the beat of our very own resident DJ. Yohan Irani made his debut at this function as the next upcoming DJ for ZSBC under the training of Jessi Partovi. Gatha Prayers 2007
August 15-19, 2007
The Gatha prayers this year set some kind of record in the history of ZSBC both in terms of attendance and the number of Mobeds who prayed at the same time. We were delighted to receive the services of Ervad Soli Dastur & his wife JoAnn who came down from Sarasota, USA at his own expense to perform all the five days of prayers. Ervad Soli was joined by Mobed Jamshid Jamshidi & Mobed Firdos Balsara on some of the days. We thank all three mobeds for their magnificent recital of prayers and giving us all a truly spiritual awakening. ZSBC marked a history on second gatha when three priests performed jashan ceremony praying together.
Vast crowds thronged the Darbe-Mehr on all the five days with people standing outside the prayer hall due to lack of space inside. Humbandagi prayers were recited everyday with members joining in enthusiastically. Delicious food cooked and sponsored by various members was served on all five days. On the fifth gatha Ervad Soli Dastur gave a powerpoint presentation on the jashan ceremony with English translations which was very much appreciated by everybody particularly by our young children and youths. We thank Sam Behramfram for arranging the wide screen and projector for the presentation. If you missed the presentation go to the internet using the links below:

You will also need an .mpg video file for the Hama Zor greeting enactment within the PowerPoint Presentation: http://etarapur.tripod.com/hamazor.mpg
We are very grateful to Kashmira Suraliwalla & her mother Roda Elavia for the arrangement and co-ordination of the prayers & food as well as providing accommodation to Ervad Soli & JoAnn Dastur. We are also grateful to tons of volunteers who gave their time in cooking food, general arrangements, giving ride to seniors etc. Due to constraints of space we are unable to acknowledge you individually but please accept our heartfelt thanks to you all.

Farrokh Namdaran and Koomi Italia were celebrating their birthday that day. They were surprised by a cake cutting ceremony. Everybody enjoyed the delicious Black Forest Cake.
We appreciate the tremendous effort put in by the Socials Director, Jessi Partovi, who was also the DJ for the night for sponsoring the light and music free of cost. The young and the old danced the night away till midnight.
All that was heard from the guests were praises and repeated requests to hold many such events. Last but not the least; all this was not possible without the support of many volunteers who helped make this event to be one of the greatest parties of the year. Hold on your hearts friends, more such events are coming.
